Has anyone built a shelter to survive a near extinction level event?

All of the major Gov's have built their doomsday bunker and have been doing so since WWI. And of course the most obvious is the space station which they consider to be our last outpost. All World leaders will take the people they feel necessary and their families.

A near extinction level event, as opposed to just a very very bad event, would by definition mean that it is pretty much unknowable what life forms would survive and in what condition. By life forms, we mean every animal and every plant that you know about. Unless you plan to stockpile enough food to last you the rest of your life, there is no way to prepare to survive such an event, and quite likely you wouldn't want to survive it anyway if you stopped to think what the rest of your life would be like.

The most likely near extinction level event that could happen in your lifetime is if global warming turned out at the high end of the forecasts. You'd be better off spending your time and energy on making sure that never happens than trying to figure out how to survive something that has never been seen in the entire history of the human race.

Without getting into specifics. There are two key people I have regularly had the wonderful pleasure of speaking with over the past 3+ years, one of which is a retired US army vet and is currently residing at the washington veterans hospital, he is very ill. I don't even know if he is still alive, I haven't spoken to him in months.

The other lives, and resides (alone mind you) in a abandoned missile test facility in southern canada . Some background on him and some small details of his responsibilities: He's in his late 60's, he did much work on radiation detection in the cold war era. He is for all intense questions sterile , (Sadly he can not produce children).

He is responsible for keeping the facility clean, operational and stocked with food rations. The original bunker that was constructed uses the steel from old school buses, it was modified to go over a mile under ground. We have been trading back and forth information on visual radiation detection methods for some time now.

He's a brilliant man. I take my hat off to him. He eats, sleeps , and lives there.

Has little contact with the outside world, when he does go out it is for incredibly short periods. I'm not sure if it was the bunker that made him sterile or his work, but one thing is for sure he leads a lonely isolated life. (Other than email and phone/fax) While I really cant give you sources or names I thought the information was important none the less.

Feel free to vote this down or ask me questions I can or cannot answer. (I'll do whatever I can to elaborate).

Extinction occurring every 26 to 30 million years. Would be due in little more than 10 million years. Holocene extinction event.

Very similar effects to asteroid impacts. The asteroid impact theory does. Extinction event refers to extinction of species, not all life.

That the "event" is at most a transition in dominant life forms. Possible, but no such event has ever been discovered. Nuclear warheads could be fired at America in a Nuclear War.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
