Has anyone here ever used Rosetta Stone to learn a language?

I am using Rosetta Stone for French right now. You are correct that it is expensive, but I am finding it a very intuitive way to learn. Their idea is teaching you to learn another language the way you learned your first language as a child.

For example, they will show you a picture of a man running. They will say and show you the words for "The man runs. " Next, they may show you a picture of a woman running.

You already know the word for 'runs', so you intuit that the new word is 'woman'. Then you will learn 'boy', 'girl', 'dog', 'cat', etc. Now they show you the man again, only now he is jumping. On through the woman, boy, girl, etc. Jumping.

You are learning the correct verb forms, as you are acquiring vocabulary. You learn in 4 ways, too. They show you the picture, with the words onscreen, and you hear the pronunciation.

Then you get the picture and some words, and you must make the corresponding sentence. They also show you a group of pictures, and you have to choose the one which corresponds to what you heard the narrator say. You also have to practice pronunciation.

They focus alot on your accent being correct, and I think the spoken part is the hardest so far. You get to see the voice print of the native speaker, and then you have to try to make your voice print look the same. In my opinion, it is absolutely worth the money if you have it to spend.

If you are learning another language for work, perhaps you could persuade your company to help you pay for it. I am footing my own bill, because I just want to learn French for my eventual trip, and I have tried other methods with very limited success. It's fun, and there is a tremendous amount of material in the program.

In my French Levels 1 and 2, I have a curriculum text for each level; each runs about 100 pages, more or less. Level 1 contains 8 chapters with 12 lessons in each; Level 2, 11 Chapters with 10 or 11 lessons in each. The documentation is high quality, and there is a separate User Guide for Levels 1 and 2.

As I said, I am doing this on my own, so I really have no timetable and work on it when I can. What is interesting is that when I do return after a couple of weeks' or months' hiatus, I have an excellent retention of the material. I hope this info helps.

Learning German I am currently in an online college class for German I and they are using the online version of the Rosetta Stone software. I am really not that impressed with it to be honest. They use a "total immersion" technique where from day 1 you are just given simple German sentences.

They don't tell you what words mean, you are meant to figure out the meanings on your own as you do when you are a child learning your native tongue based on context. The problem with this is that as the concepts get more complicated I don't know 100% for sure what some words mean. For example it'll show an illustration of a fat man sitting at a table eating a cake and then say "Ich bin dick.".

Then a picture of a thin waiter that says "Ich bin dunn. ". I can kind of figure out that it means the "I am fat" and "I am skinny", respectively.

But, it could also mean I am big, or I am small, I am large, I am thin, I am rotund, etc. Without looking up each word in an online dictionary I never know for sure. The biggest problem this creates is with grammar, especially in a language like German where the grammar is really weird. They never explain any grammar rules to you, you are just meant to learn them as you go along.

Without having hundreds of examples of different sentence formations, this is hard to do in my opinion. I think they could at least supplement it with some hard grammar rules. I also feel that I can't speak German at all.

Since it's all computer based they can't really have me making up my own sentences. I can understand simple German relatively well for a beginner, and I can read it, but I can't even begin to form my own sentences without basing it off one of the sentences they've already used. Yes, speaking any language is harder than just understanding it no matter how you learn it, but I find that Rosetta Stone is especially weak in this area.

The disc based Rosetta Stone that you order on TV may be different than the one I'm taking online, I'm not really sure. But, so far I have been pretty unpleased with my experience of Rosetta Online.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
