Atkins diet - weight loss yes, but .. I lost about 60 pounds on the Atkins diet, but what had happened was that at about 29, my body's metabolism shifted (multiples of 15 approximately - loss of puberty times 2 or 3 etc..) and this signaled the start of a lifelong battle with weight. Did I mention a Twinkie addiction? My recommendation would be to find a naturopathic doctor or a good nutritionist or CNHP Professional (may be a challenge, but I'm sure there are some up your way (locate on the practitioners part of the CNHP Website) and discuss weight issues with him or her.

The typical American diet is very bad, no wonder we’re all porkers.. Oink, oink.. A recent Symptoms class I took, working on CNHP certification, prompted us to measure our urine pH as often as we could, and observe the body's acidity/alkalinity numbers on every occasion. Gee, I turn out to be acidic, and the foods which will help balance that are - you guessed it, pretty much all vegetables, seeds, nuts, leafy dark green veggies and some fruits (lemon, lime, oranges...), skipping as much meats as possible, all aimed at getting the body's pH back into the 6.2 to 6.5 range where it can metabolize the foods (vitamins and minerals) it needs to do its work. One might be eating the most wonderful foods, but if the body's pH is not in the right range, many of those nutrients never get processed and just get flushed.

Minerals in particular are sensitive to the body's pH, and just don't get processed; they may be there, but don't get metabolized. Another goodie I learned was that if one is taking calcium for whatever reason, it needs to be the right type of calcium - there are many kinds, calcium lactate, others .. not all calcium supplements are going to help us unless it's the form of calcium which would help balance out our pH. Too much calcium, especially of the wrong kind for our body chemistry, can plate out into the arteries - Very Bad, may lead to heart problems years later (Even my cardiologist told me that..) Prefer to not have the artery roto-rooter done.

A boring diet to be sure, but one can go off the recommended foods once in a while for a treat! When I do mountain or nature trail duty (I'm also a Naturalist Docent in a foothills county park) the mountain goats on 2 legs are all skinny, and usually older than I am (near retirement! ) - not much huffing and puffing for them!

Oh yes, I can't believe how many nurses were taking the CNHP classes.. there is a whole world out there of alternative health professionals! Doesn't mean that conventional medicine is bad, it's just that their programs give little training on the body's natural health needs. One does not always need a drug to cover up a problem - why not try to fix the problem instead, and maybe the drug won't be needed!

Yes, quite a bit. Years ago I had a run in with a car. I was walking and the car was running.

I lost. I spent almost 9 months in various casts. I had been extremely active prior to this and gained weight like a pig.

Went from about 250 pounds of muscle to 315 of fat. It took me a year but I dropped to 240. It was tough.

I found that you can't eat all you want. You have to eat less calories than you burn to loose weight. If you need 2000 calories a day, and you take in 3000, you will gain weight.

Even if all you eat is steak, 3000 calories of steak will make you gain weight. You will also have side effects. I have found that a balanced low carb diet seem to work well for many people.

However, not everyone's body reacts the same. Other diets work for other people. If you want to try the low carb diet, don't stay on the induction phase for longer than recommended.

I would take vitamin and fiber supplements. One problem with a pure Atkins diet is that it is low in fiber and can cause some intestinal issues. Make sure your fiber supplement is not full of sugar.

I gain weight writing about food, so I am back on the diet again.

Yes Years ago when It was found that I had Diabetes, the Doctor advised me to go out and buy the Atkins diet book. At the time I was 245 pounds. I took my medicine and followed the diet of no Carbohydrates, they turn to sugar in your body.

I went from 245 pounds to 178 pounds. I havn't followed the diet in years but have stayed at that weight ever since, but I still do watch what I eat. That is except for that dish of ice cream every night.

I deserve some thing at 68, don't you think? .

Here is a great testimonial. I like beef jerky. I have also found that I am not allergic to all dairy, only to cow’s milk.So armed with beef jerky and goat cheese, I began the diet.

To me, goat cheese generally tastes terrible unless you have crackers to accompany it. However, no crackers were allowed. I gnawed on the beef jerky for a couple of days, which was a good choice, since I enjoy snacking.

I ate some goat cheese, and some dried soy nuggets that were artificially sweetened with something. I drank plenty of diet sodas. On the third day, I held a garage sale.

I found that I could hardly stand up when I got out of bed that morning. This was after only two full days on the Atkins diet. For me, the difficulty staying on the diet was not the restrictions imposed, made all the more restrictive by my dairy allergy, but by the pure lack of energy that I experienced.

I felt as though my legs were made out of lead. And so, after waiting out the day to see if this was something temporary that might go away, I quit the diet. Granted, the feeling might have gone away, but I had too many things to do in order to risk feeling that badly for even one more day.

Also, had the feeling persisted, exercise would have been next to impossible. If it hadn’t been for the severe exhaustion and the dairy allergy, I might have enjoyed the diet. I suspect that I would have quite happily subsisted on the whipped cream with vanilla and artificial sweeter dessert forever, without ever feeling the need for a steak.

The Atkins Diet has several tasty recipes, all of which I was too busy to cook at the time. Also, had I been a tad less lazy about the manner in which I approached the diet, and eaten some of the permitted veggies, such as asparagus, broccoli, avocado and cauliflower, all of which I adore, I might have had more success. Asparagus dripping with real butter.

Why did I pass that up? Chances are, something was needed to mitigate the effects of unlimited beef jerky and goat cheese. I suppose what I did was Atkins Diet Extreme.

I don’t recommend it! It did become clear that the Atkins diet is something that would be hard to do if you were on a strict budget. I admit, this is something that I was worried about at the time—how I would feed my family their ‘normal’ diet and cook up constant steaks and chicken breasts for myself, while shopping at the gourmet market for goat cheese and fresh vegetables.

At that time, my family was refusing to eat fresh anything, and were only satisfied with pizza, french fries, and all of the other things that are verboten on this diet. It can be hard to go it alone. My recommendations to anyone who is considering this diet are to make sure that you have the budget to buy the tastiest vegetables, meats and cheeses; and that you have a source of support that will help you cope with the sight of your family, friends and colleagues chowing down on donuts, freshly baked bread with honey, birthday cake and other torments. Definitely broaden the diet as much as you can while still staying within the guidelines.

Watch out for excessive amounts of beef jerky! Sources: http://diet.lovetoknow.com/wiki/My_Experience_with_The_Atkins_Diet .

I think many people lose weight on the Atkins diet because it is really the celiac diet. Celiac's can't eat dairy... or gluten grains which they also crave and causes weight gain. Dairy and gluten grains stimulate opioid receptors in the brain which then makes you crave them.

Celiac's also crave sugar. The celiac diet is for life. I eat meat, vegetables, organic brown rice, nuts and seed (crack open the shell to avoid wheat contamination), eggs .

Celiac destroys the intestines so to not eat this way destroys my body.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
