Has the time come to move past beauty contests?

Oh yeah, I've thought so for years. They're a very antiquated idea that came from the days when women really were viewed as cattle up for judging just based on looks and personality. Now I don't want to go all feminist commando on you, so I won't lay it on thick about women being objectified.

I'll even refrain from Barbie doll comments. But you have to admit that it does seem a little absurd to have pageants to judge a person by beauty and baton twirling. You know some of the amazing credentials women hold nowadays. So why are these archaic contests still around?

Well not much for ratings anymore. Other than a few sex tapes and funny YouTube clips, no one cares much about pageants anymore. Nor do most people respect the winners the way they used to.

After all, the winners seem on the same level as reality show contestants! Now I'm a woman who loves competition, and I can *almost* understand the sporting side of pageants. So if they're going to continue at all, they need to be completely overhauled to really be a measure of how amazing a man or woman is--there should be qualifying rounds in which the men/women must show physical prowess, intellectual acuity, artistic skills, and humor. If we wanted to make an Olympics for the most well-rounded human being on the planet (without turning it into a cheesy reality show), then THAT I would watch.

It would have to claim some of the dignity of the old pageants. And no bikinis! (unless the physical prowess involves water skiing).

If that happened, then maybe Miss America would be a fearsome woman to be hold, truly the smartest, strongest, most amazing woman in the country. What a contest that would be!

No. The current beauty contests are not very good; but, there is nothing wrong with the idea of a beauty contest in theory. The beauty contest dates at least from the ancient Greek period, where the classic mythological example was the Judgment of Paris.

If we could get back to a classic true beauty contest instead of the current mishmash of beauty, talent political correctness, morals, and professional hairdressing and clothing, then we would have something admirable. I don't see any reason whatsoever why a contest for beauty is any more wrong than a contest about who can jump highest or run fastest etc.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
