This gray globe is in you ADDRESS BAR. It's just Firefox's way of showing whether the site is using SSL or not. It's not a missing plugin, it's just what you see on every single website that didn't bother setting up SSL.
That's completely fine though, since only websites used for online banking or the like are supposed to use an encrypted connection.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
