I think it will be depend on your location, because we Indonesian people love local souvenirs from each of Place/region. For example, if you are in Kyoto, it will be good to give the traditional one, but if you are in Tokyo, it's good to give the modern-art one. Just got back from Japan in June 2012, and I like the "Geisha doll" that we've bought in a store near Kiyamizu-dera Temple in Kyoto.
It just reminds our memory back there. At Tokyo, the Skytree miniature I think will be a good present. Or maybe you can give them your best sake, we loved it too!
:).
I would say local souvenirs. It depends on your location. Maybe in your location you have something really unique local stuffs.
It can be foods, clothes, key chains or other things. Maybe you can also ask them to take photo wearing japanese kimono. Because photograph can also be a good gifts.
It also create memories.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
