Old age is not a diagnosis, and is an unacceptable answer to be given when an animal is obviously suffering from a real medical condition. It sounds as though nothing has been done other than to medicate for pain and inflammation, and it doesn't sound like her pain is being relieved. Can you find a different vet to come?
I don't know how sure you are, but if you are correct and what you are smelling is gangrene, then she most likely already has suffered a bowel infarction and possibly a ruptured bowel as well. If that has happened, she will not survive for much longer. If you can get any vet out there to euthanize her it would spare her further suffering.
I'm sorry for your situation. It sounds like the vets have really dropped the ball on this one.
Im terribly sorry to hear about this. But Julie is right. You need to call another vet because this cant go on.
They need to do something. It sounds like Impaction colic and older horses get it easier then young ones. Impaction colic means they cant digest the food and it needs sergery.
She is a little old to have sergery but they need to do something. I wouldnt let the other vet treat her anymore. She needs to be put on an IV otherwise she will thirst to death.
In 3 days of not drinking she will be dead. In 3 weeks of not eating she will be dead also. You need to have a different vet treat her or put her down.
Its the best thing that can be done for her. Best wishes and I hope she can overcome this. It would be a meirical but with the right vet and treatment it might be able to happen.
Good luck, Hope this helped.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
