Try to figure this one out! I moved to South Texas because I was sick of the snow. Now that I've been down here for quite a few years - care to guess what I miss?
Why snow, of course! I don't miss driving in it - but I do miss seeing it on the trees and on the ground, especially around this time of the year. Snow and Christmas just seem to go together.
The last time it snowed down here, we had about an inch 3-4 years ago.....I was so excited about the prospect of seeing snow that I woke up around 2 AM and looked out the window and yes, there it was! Then, I went back to bed. And when I woke up - it was gone.So much for that.
Even though its supposed to go down to around 29 tonight, do you think we'll see snow in the morning? You gotta be kiddin' - won't happen. So much for a white Christmas. And one good thing about the cold weather - which I much prefer - not bone-chilling cold with wind chills of 50 below, but cold, winter-type weather, teens and 20's.
If you can't get warm, you can always put on more clothes. When the temps hit 100 or more as they frequently do around here - hit 100 a few years ago in February, that was a joy! - there's only so much you can take off before you're breaking the law!
There is down here what I term, Texas macho - these are the idiots who want to show how they aren't bothered by the cold, so when it gets into the 20's, they're parading around in a tank top, shorts and flip flops, and are invariably hunched over with their arms wrapped around themselves freezing to death, but hey, they're macho Texans, look at how they're dressed! Put out a few bucks for a jacket and some long pants dummy! If you catch pneumonia, even with a good co-pay, its going to cost you more than that in the hospital.
Even when I lived up North, I detested the really hot, sticky weather - I would have loved it if the temps had stayed around 75-80 during the Summer months and were cooler during the Fall and Spring, but no such luck. So, I got a good job down here thinking it wouldn't be so bad - hah! We have 3 seasons here - hot, hotter, and oh my God, how do you live in this? And the leaves don't even change colors on the trees - they just get brown and fall off.
Boring! When all is said and done - if I didn't have a job I really love and wasn't too old, I'd relocate back up North in a heartbeat - at least there you have a change of seasons. So, for all you people who are thinking of moving down here because its so "nice" - it isn't.
Stay up there and enjoy your snow and changes of seasons - you'll be glad you did! Sources: My opinions Google Map View Larger Map Look! See the leaves turning brown?.
You could fry an egg on the sidewalk here........ I live in Peoria, Arizona and our summer temperatures here can really soar. Our highest temp I can remember was 122 degrees in Phoenix right next door some years ago, setting a record. I’ve lived in Arizona for about 27 years now and it is sometimes still hard to tolerate the warm summers. As it is a dry heat here, it is very searing and if you stay out a long time under the sun, you almost feel like you’re getting cooked.
I was born in Las Vegas, Nevada so I’ve known warm weather most of my life so that’s what I’m most accustomed to. I’ve been asked before if you really can fry an egg on the sidewalk and the answer is yes.My friends and I actually did that when I was in high school. It wasn’t the high quality you’d expect like from a frying pan but it cooked rather well nevertheless.
I’ve also been witness to people using gloves or oven mitts to touch their steering wheels after their cars have been sitting in the summer sun all day until the car cools off with the A/C. I’ve also experienced the other extreme when I was stationed in the Army in upstate New York where temperatures got as low as 30 below zero with the wind chill factor. Coming from a warm climate, that can be a shock to the system.
Another duty station of mine in the Army was Seoul, South Korea and their winters in that city are without snow but the cold will chill you right to the bone and then some. One amazing thing about the human body is that it is so adaptable to different extremes. All in all, I still favor the warm temperatures and the nice thing about Arizona is you can go a couple hours north in summer and experience 10 degree cooler temperature changes if you need it.
Also, in the winter here in the Peoria/Phoenix area, we get about 7 months of cooler weather from October to April (temperatures in the 50's, 60’s, and 70's) and that’s just what the doctored ordered after those blazing summers..
Here on the oregon coast, we have very mild weather. Although we frequently have frost in the winter, we rarely have a true freeze, and a hot summer rarely hits 90 degrees. However, in my history, I have been a fanatic skiier, going to the slopes 3 or more times a week, and have worked in LA in august, 100 degrees in the shade and there ain't no shade.
I spent three weeks one July working on a superheated steam boiler in 100 degree plus weather, as well. The particular weather I dislike is just above freezing, and raining. Cold and wet sinks in and stays.
I'd rather be subfreezing than cold and wet.
I like cold weather and snow... I don't like hot weather because after a while, you've stripped down to just barely wearing anything and you're still too hot. You can do anything to get cooler. It's miserable.
I much prefer colder weather because you can always pile more blankets or sweaters on. You can always get warmer. Plus, I love the snow.
If you look at it under a streetlight, it looks like glitter falling from the sky. It's beautiful and amazing. I'm not sure, but it might be the perfect weather.
Plus, it tickles when it lands on your hand.
Both I like both which is why I live in New England where we have both every day...sometimes every hour. I'd go mad if the weather stayed the same all the time. That said, given that I'm in the middle of a snow/sleet storm at the moment, Key West is looking better all the time.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
