In my experience as an organic gardener for over 20 years (in two states and four cities) gardening organically reduces the likelyhood of pests. I have had aphids and slugs and that is about it. Plants that are healthier are less suseptible to pests in the first place.

I plant garlic throughout my garden because I like garlic and it provides some repellant benefits. I also plant garlic around the base of fruit trees and roses.
If you do have a pest problem strong blasts of water from a hose and/or insecticidal soap will take care of many pests. For slugs iron phosphate products including the brand Slug Out are not harmful to other creatures.
I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
