I'm not a hair professional, but I see one every 5 weeks and it seems I've asked her about this for my mother. I guess it depends upon the difference in spectrum from your natural color to blond. Often, the colorist will gradually change your hue so that it gets darker (if that's the direction you need) or add highlights to help with the transition from dark to light in the case of my mom who dyes her hair red (she's 81) and is most likely silver or white.
Either way, let a professional help and don't do it yourself.
