Tough problem. Some copper wire has a coating on it so it looks like aluminum. All I can say is that aluminum wire is usually bigger than copper since it has higher resistance.
You could measure the resistance but the comparison would have to be made between two identical length and diameter wires. Maybe scraping the surface and have a look. Copper is reddish brown.

Take a knife blade and scrape the wire. If the interior is copper color, the wire is copper.
If you cut the wire then you can usually see what the inner metal is. Copper will be also be heavier, and feel a bit springier than aluminum. Of course, if it is insulated, the insulation will usually have a CU or AL in the labeling.
The wire is a solid core and not very big. It came out of an old stereo if that helps. I will try some of the above solutions.
