I would not say that knowing the Latin language is “hopeless. It really depends on what your intentions are when learning the Latin language. Latin is an ancient language, which was traditionally spoken in Latium and Ancient Rome.It is considered a dead language because no one speaks the language except Latin scholars and some members of the Catholic and Protestant clergy who learnt the language during their religious studies.
Latin is, in a way, the mother of many modern languages. French, Spanish, Portugese, Catalan, Italian and other Romance languages all had roots in Latin. The language is also responsible for the formation of many new words still in the English language.
Unfortunately, because no one really speaks Latin now, you can’t use it in real world situations. However, you will find the Latin language useful if you are a Latin language scholar, or a linguistics scholar majoring in any of the Romance languages as well as the English language. If you have some knowledge of Latin and are learning a new language, this will help you understand some of the words you are learning.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
