How can one prepare for a long trip abroad?

Know what you want to get out of the trip. Once you are sure what that is you can research the destinations and experiences that will allow you to best meet your objectives. The practical stuff should follow your bigger goals.

I made a hub about that. Hope be useful for you:hubpages.com/hub/7_must_have_long_trip.

There are many ways to prepare for a long trip abroad, but my personal favorite is to plan on not having a plan. Instead, think about the kind of things you want to discover on your trip abroad, do some research about what is unique to the country that you are visiting, and make a mental plan to experience the ones that interest you. Travel with an open mind, and rather than an itinerary, have a loose plan open to change as you see fit.

You will meet wonderful people, and be open to them. Be kind to everyone as you will meet most of these people only once, but perhaps the positive impression you leave on them can help you in some beautiful way some important day. Most of all, leave part of yourself in the place that you visit, and bring part of it back with you.

Step one is figuring out exactly how long you plan on being gone. It means the difference between just packing clothes and hygene essentials and getting someone to pick up your mail or having someone housesit or move your stuff into storage, get your prescriptions in order if necessary, and making sure you have all of your important documents (including a will and your passport) in order. You also have to look into vaccinations, medications, and any food issues you may encounter being in a new environment.

Bring your own first aid kit, too.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
