When life is in danger I do advocate protecting oneself and others IF your assessment of the situation deems a chance of success. The "macho" approach will spell defeat. However, if you are properly trained in self defense and are of sound mind to make such assessments than it is your duty and responsibility to protect yourself and others. It's a tough line and a touch call.
Very good question!
It takes in incredible amount of training and experience to consistently disarm someone else. Otherwise, just give them whatever they want. In most cases, fight if your assailant tries to tie you or some else up in your home.
They obviously aren't tying you up for your pleasure. They're statistically much more likely to severely injure or kill you. Legally, you are allowed to use as much physical force, but no more than is necessary to stop their attack.
Federal law doesn't require you to run away from an assault of any kind or just let it happen. Usually the 'robber' has more fighting experience and is much more violent than the victim. Money can be replaced.Be calm, move slow, and try to talk as little as possible.
I'm with those who say it depends. Playing it safe, isn't always safe as some like to suggest. The robber may not be there to simply rob you....if they are unstable their goal may be to harm you as well.
A woman has the added concern of a possible rape. There is nothing macho or stupid about deciding to use self defense nor is it weak or cowardly to decide not to. I do advise that people learn self defense just in case.
I'm taking jeet kune do classes right now. It's good to have some self defense knowledge in your back pocket. As far as the legal issues that one person raised, I certainly am not qualified to give advice on that.
But I will say that in a police taught self defense class I took years ago, they said that you can go as far as you need to in order to incapacitate the perpetrator or remove the threat, but no further. I'm sure each state has their own nuances on self defense laws. Perhaps one of our lawyer members can chime in.....
Legally every jurisdiction has a different law, however a general rule of thumb is that you cannot use force that is much greater than your attacker. For example, you should not use deadly force (a gun) on a unarmed person. On the other hand, you should protect yourself.
Learn how to shoot a gun safely, store a gun safely and then buy a gun to protect yourself.
Many people have been killed fighting off robbers. It is a stupid idea to fight a person holding a gun or a knife on you. But a person can fight if they have a death wish.
I would suggest that a person stay calm, and hopefully the robber will be finished with his business soon. The robber is not there to kill you, he is there to rob you. It is better to get robbed than to be killed.
It depends, but simply put stay calm and co-operate. One mistake can make it fatal.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
