We know from behavioral science that a new behavior needs to be rewarded frequently in order for it to become a permanent habit. Developing a new habit means rewarding the new behavior over and over again until it becomes a normal part of your routine. Once it becomes a habit, you can back off the rewards a bit.
Over time, you may find that the behavior itself has rewarding properties; for example, feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction. This frees you from having to reward the behavior over and over. However, ongoing occasional rewards will keep the new behavior going strong.
