Late night feeding might help... I used to have this issue with my cats, then I started them on scheduled feedings and it solved the problem. I feed my cats measured portions early in the morning, snack in the afternoon, and a late supper. Cats seem to like to sleep right after they eat so by picking up their food it gives them something to look forward to and helps you manage their weight.
I feed them their supper right before I go to bed and they seem to just eat, wash, and settle down for the night. They usually don't wake me up until 6:30 am now. Also, before they get their supper I try to play with them with an interactive toy for awhile while I am watching tv.
They love a toy called the Cat Dancer, which is a pathetic looking piece of wire with cardboard pieces on each end. They are only about three dollars at Petsmart. That, plus the late night supper usually tires them out for the whole night .
Train your cat that nothing good comes of waking you up (like feeding) Here's a helpful site: cats.about.com/od/youandyourcat/tp/sleep... a google search with tons more info:google.com/search?hl=en&q=cats+sleep+at+... some general info from that site, plus my commentary. I have two cats, and I've had this problem off and on, especially at first. A lot of it is training them behaviorally that nothing fun happens when they bug us.
Our biggest problem now is that one purrs very loudly as she sleeps, but it's so cute we can't be mad. :-)1. Give Your Cat His Own Bed (and keep it off limits at all times).
Once a cat finds your bed a comfortable place to snooze during the day, he will automatically want to sleep with you at night. Give kitty a comfortable bed in a spare room, corner of the living room (with a screen for privacy), or even a bathroom. If necessary, rub a bit of catnip on the bed initially, to encourage him to use it.
* From my experience, if anyone has allergies, this also helps them have a "cat free" zone. 2. Schedule Playtime Before BedCats are normally nocturnal animals.
They sleep all day and play or hunt all night. You can help readjust their schedules by scheduling an interactive play period of at least 15 minutes before bedtime, with a toy. Follow the play sessions with a snack for kitty and a warm bath for yourself.
Both of you will feel more like sleeping when you are through. *From me again: make sure kitty isn't sleeping all day. This means setting aside a couple of playtimes during the day.
We have a lazer pointer that we use while we're watching TV. Our cats also have a dog sister to keep them active all day. 3.
Close the Bedroom DoorA determined cat might scratch at the door for awhile, but he will eventually give up and either go to sleep or find some other activity. You can help prevent damage to the door by either mounting a vertical scratch pad on it, trimming his nails, or using Soft Claws. *Soft claws are awesome if you have a scratcher4.
Use EarplugsIf his scratching at the door keeps you awake, even though he eventually stops, use earplugs. Swimmers' earplugs effective seal the ear canal and should give you some sleep relief5. Use Ocean Sounds or White NoiseThere are a number of commercial products on the market for peaceful sounds that will help you sleep (with the cat on the other side of the door).
You can select from bird sounds, ocean/waterfall sounds, or just "white noise," and earphones will help amplify and enhance the sleep-inducing effects.6. If He's Home Alone, Adopt a Second CatA single cat may easily become bored at home alone all day, and rightfully will expect his human companion to give him attention in the evening and at night. A second cat will give him companionship of his own kind to keep him happy during the day, and will lessen those nocturnal urges to wake you for play.
This is especially true with kittens, who have much more excess energy to burn during their first year of growth. Two kittens are almost always better than one. *This helped a lot with my first little devil.
She was a nightime pouncer, but once she got her sister (another full grown cat of the same age adopted at the humane society) she calmed down a lot. Their dog sister has helped with this, too. She guards the bed from noisy cats; she doesn't mind if they're sleeping, but if they're pouncing, she'll send them out of the room.
7. Darken the RoomIf you are only bothered by those pouncing, biting attacks at your toes at night, use those room-darkening shades to completely darken the room. Replace the digital or florescent dial clocks by the bedside.
Although cats can see in very low light, they cannot see in total darkness. (They'll also be more inclined to go to sleep. )8.
Don't Give In To Food DemandsIf your sleep annoyance is those little pitty-pats or nose bumps to your cheeks in early morning hours when kitty thinks it's time for breakfast, don't allow her to train you. Tell her firmly, "no! ," then cover your head with the sheet, blanket, or even pillow, if necessary.
When your own clock (internal or table model) tells you it's time to wake up, feed her immediately. She'll soon learn that breakfast is served on your schedule rather than hers. *I feed my cats right before bed so they aren't out of food in the AM.
This has helped a TON. 9. Try a Temporary Sleep AidYou should consider this only a temporary solution as your feline nocturnal training progresses.
*I think this article is geared towards people with sleep disorders and cat problems, so this is probably not necessary for most people. 10. Establish a Predictable ScheduleCats do not like surprises, and are most happy when their household revolves around a predictable schedule.
Giving them a set time for food, safe outdoor play, interactive play, grooming, and petting will go a long way toward maintaining their well-being and giving you a good night's sleep, every night. *Cats know your schedule. One of our cats knows each alarm, and knows who to ask for pets when they go off.
It took awhile, but my cats rarely bother me at night now, unless it's really hot and they want ice cubes to play with. Good luck! Kitties are so much fun unless it's 3am!

Play with them during the day or isolate them You can play with them during the day, so they are more tired at night. You can restrict them to a distant part of the house so their playing won't bother you.
Cats are nocturnal some cats are busy during the day but seeing as they are naturally night critters there isn't to much you can do. Put them in a seperate area of the house at night-- or keep them very busy durying the day so they are tired at night and hope that you can change their internal clock perhaps. Good luck .
Much like children... All creatures, even the nocturnal ones need a certain ammount of sleep each day/night in order to fuinction properly, so much like children - the best way to get them to sleep at night is to play with them and wear them out prior to bedtime. Cats are the exact same. My cat used to be such a pain at night-time, now however, due to the weeks of practice, tiring him out during the mid evening, and making sure he realizes when we go to bed, he follows us in each night and curls up himself.
Some nights, that we stay up late - to watch a movie or whatever - he will be the one to say "Hey its time to go to bed you know! " So while it may take a bit of time training them, a quick solution is to simply wear them out during the day.
