How come a 17 year old can be charged in adult court on a criminal offence, but is kept in juvenile court for missing school?

Truancy is not a criminal offence and would fall under the jurisdiction of JIPS (Juvenile in Need of Protection or Services). Youth ages 17 and above are only dealt with in adult criminal court for criminal offenses.

Attendance in school is mandatory until the age of 18 by State Law. More.
