I would say " how much experience do you have with guns and people who are in to shooting sports?" when she says "none, I hate guns" I would say " do you hate everything that you arent familiar with?" "or are you scared of what you don't know?" I would ask " should the police and the army be allowed to have guns?" when she says "of course, they protect us" I would say "why am I not allowed to protect myself?" as far as the quoting websites goes, thats laughable. As if peoples opinion pages are reputable reference.
Ask her if she would move on to guns and baseball bats and fists after guns were outlawed, because all the gun crimes would be committed with those. To end the arguement (or rev it right back up again) I would tell her she has a sheltered viewpoint. She lives in the city and watches too much news.
The media has her right where they want her, scared to death. They didn't even have to tell he to be scared, they just let her make her own assumtions. In a more rural setting, guns are as common and beneficial as spare tires.
Where I come from, a gun is a tool. Not a weapon, not a toy. (keep in mind that 95% of americas land mass is rural.) I would tell her that I feel sorry for her.
It must be so hard living in fear all the time. As with most fears, when we face them we get over them. Of course she is never going to face her fear, or else all that beaking off she keeps doing would seem pretty stupid.
I would bring a hammer in from the garage and ask her if it was evil. Its wood and steel, the same as a gun. There is no inherent evil in wood and steel.
She is demonizing it to fuel her own fears. I would tell her to turn off the TV and go experience the gun culture. She would see that there is no evil at all.
But again, that would be facing her fears, which im sure she doesn't have the backbone to do, or else she wouldnt define herself with fear in the first place. I could go on for days. The point is, don't get into a quoting war with her.
Get to the root of her issue, thats her fear. She won't want to talk about it anymore after you do that.
My sister was anti gun, then she shot the M1A and the 45 (though for some unexplained reason, her favorite was the damn expensive one... Women, figures! ;P ) But yea try to avoid it, weddings are about getting drunk, celebrating a union, not politic. If that fails then tell her that cars kill 35k/yr, knives I don't even know how many.
Personal experience: Been shot at once, seen / heard of over 10 people stabbed (this was in college, it was ridiculous, and I assure you all but 2, myself included, did nothing to warrant that kind of behavior, the other 2 were in fights...) So what's more dangerous? The gun that actually didn't hurt anybody, or the kitchen utensils that put nearly a dozen people in the hospital? EDIT: One of the main reasons that we haven't had terrorism in the US on the levels seen in other countries is that they (the terrorists) rightfully believe there are too many Americans with guns that would foil their plans.
Also in Mexico, guns are illegal. And we all see how well that works out for the citizens.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
