Settled by the Spanish (who kicked out the natives), the Spanish had a long history of being influenced by the Moslems (moors) who ran Spain some Centuries before King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella (same lady who changed the queen in chess from weakest to most powerful piece on the board.) In Arabic legend, "California" was a mythical isle of paradise, and when they sailed up the Sea of Cortez, they initially thought that's what they were looking at--an island. The Baja Peninsula is is long that it really took them that long to realize it's a peninsula, not an island, but by then, the name stuck. And everyone still keeps coming out here thinking it'll be their paradise.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
