Your problem could be a couple of things....First he HD may have bad sectors on it and they are in the sectors that tell the HD where the software is on it.....Or the HD may be dead itself. Choosing the USB for Ubuntu will be fine.....Just remember that it no matter if you are reinstalling Windows or installing Ubuntu it will erase everything you have on your HD....So be prepared to lose all of your pictures, music, and any other files or data you were keeping on it.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
