Kids can be pretty traumatized by a trip to the Emergency Department (ED), so when you get home, talk about what happened and reassure your child. Answer any questions that may come up. Sometimes, younger children work out their feelings through play, by drawing pictures, or by talking about the hospital.
Experts say this is a normal way for them to “desensitize” themselves. If they got a shot or had blood taken, they might want to play with a toy medical kit and pretend to be a nurse giving shots. Reliving the experience can be their way of dealing with their feelings once the emergency is over.
