How do I learn about fantasy baseball in time to participate in this year's season?

You most likely have time... If you understand baseball which I assume you do or you would not be interested in fantasy baseball it is not that difficult. First of all there are many different types and scoring systems in fantasy baseball. Probably the best way to judge what system you want to play is how much time do you want to devote to it?

There are leagues that require an hour or so a day to succeed. There are others that basically you draft your team and then just sit and watch all season. There are all sorts of different scoring systems.

Head to head, 5x5, 4x4, AL only, NL only, stock market type games, auction type leagues, salary cap leagues, etc... I would need to write about a ten page post to explain all of the different options. Here is what I would suggest to get started: I would suggest joining Yahoo! Public fantasy league.

I would join a 5x5 league. Basically you draft your team with everyone else in your league...just like a regular draft...then you set your lineup. The typical catagories would be HR, Avg, Runs, RBIs, Steals...ERA, Ks, Wins, Saves, Whip.

When you draft it is good to focus on hitting and focus on players that help you in a lot of catagories. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
