I would call a curator of a local art museum. Any wrong preservation could ruin it.

If it an oil I would coat it with a varnish called Gamvar (a Gamblin product). This is what I use on my paintings. It an accepted archiaval process and any reputable museum or art gallery knows how to handle it and even remove it from the painting a hundred years from now without damaging the painting underneath.

I think it also makes the surface consistent (no dull and shiney spots... all one sheen) and it seems to saturate the colors some... almost like taking a dry stone from your driveway and putting water on it... all of a sudden the true colors of the stone show through.
