Martial arts training is a good method to build self-confidence for students from any background as long as the instructor knows how to approach the subject efficiently. It is increasingly important to understand that every student learns and behaves differently based on personality as well as their upbringing. Most students that are looking to build self-confidence are easy to identify.
They tend to be quiet and timid in class and chances are they were signed up by someone else, either a parent or a friend. By identifying the specific needs of a student, the martial arts instructor can build a well-rounded and confident martial artist. Do extra research on the different cultural backgrounds and differences that might be influencing the students' behavior in class to ensure cultural sensitivity.
Instruct the student in a calm and relaxing tone. Maintain an authority standpoint but in a more friendly manner. Add criticism to their technique to get improvement when needed, but always ... more.
