How to Change tailights on 2005 Malibu & Malibu Maxx On a 2005 Chevrolet Mailbu 2.2L 4 cylinder REMOVE TRUNK LINER: Open your trunk. On whichever side you are changing, locate and remove the two plastic nuts by hand. Pull back the trunk liner and there will be two more plastic nuts securing the tail light assembly in the trunk area.

Remove those two plastic nuts, by hand as well REMOVE TAIL LIGHT: Now, look at the tail light (outside of the trunk) and you will see a black plastic piece, that attached and secures the tail light to the car body. Find the black Philips head screw and remove REMOVE BULB: Tail light assembly should become loose. Pull the assembly gently away from the car body.

You have reach the light bulbs, twist the light assembly to remove the dead bulb. Remove the two Philips head screws. The lower portion of the tailight assembly will still be fixed to the vehicle. Pull firmly to un-snap third and final fastner.

You may want to insert a putty knife at the height of the backuup light.
