How do you get cigarette smoke out of a car?

A family member was gracious enough to buy a cheap replacement car for me, but the inside REEKS of cigarette smoke! I can barely stand it! I am severely allergic to cigarette smoke, and not only was the smell horrendous, but the smoke residue/smell was setting off my asthma...As soon as I got it home I sprayed the seats with Febreeze, the used both Oust air sanitizer and Citrus Fresh brand industrial air deodorizer/smell eliminator... but the smoke OVERPOWERED all THREE of them!

I did some research and people try a lot of things:Coffee grounds in a sock left in the carBowl of orange rinds left for a couple daysBowl of distilled white vinegar left for a couple days. Boxes of baking soda and/or scrubbing sprinkle/vacuum up carpet cleaner. I even heard of lighting coffee grounds on fire to get rid of the smell..What worked for you?

What didn't? I plan to clean the car thoroughly, including the dash/headboard... I just want tips that worked for you. Thanks!

You will love this . . .

Go to Sam's club . . .

They sell a product called Odo-Ban. It is wonderful. I have used it on some pretty stinky places and it works well.

Good luck - ew! :0) .

The best way to go is to douse it with a ton of vinegar Removing Cigarette Smoke Smell from your Car * Good old Vinegar The same mixture of vinegar and baking soda that you used on the walls inside the house can work on the interior of the car (one cup of white vinegar for every two cups of warm water along with a good scoop of baking soda). Wash down the windows, plastic moldings, and metals with a generous amount on a sponge. Don’t use this on fabric, however.

Treat fabric as you would carpet inside – saturate it with baking soda, spray with a diluted solution of essential oil and water (optional), let sit overnight, and vacuum. * Cigarette Smoke Smell Home Remedies: There are almost as many cigarette smell removal remedies as there are people. Some of the ideas appear to mask the smell with another more powerful odor rather than to remove, so be sure you are going to be happy with the result.

Here are some of them: o Fill a tub with vinegar and place it on the floor in the front seat, close the windows, open the floor vents and turn on the heat full blast. Let the car run in this state for an hour before removing the tub. Another version of this remedy requires hot summer weather and allowing the tub sit on the floor with the windows closed all day.

O Leave an opened bag of charcoal in the car overnight. O Put a few drops of vanilla extract on a rag and toss it under the seat. O Put a sliced apple in a cup and set it on the floor.

Leave it until it shrivels. O Sprinkle dry coffee grounds on the floor of the car, let them sit there for a few days and vacuum them up. O Mix of apple sauce and cinnamon and put it into a jar with holes punched in the lid.

Place the jar on the floor of the car. Which ever method you try, be prepared for several re-applications. You are going to most likely need them.

If you have any tips to make this easier, please share them with the rest of us using the form below. Good luck! Sources: http://www.howtogetridofstuff.com/odor-removal/how-to-get-rid-of-cigarette-smoke-smell/ .

Here a few things you may want to try: Things You'll Need Glass Cleaner Sponge Baking Soda leather cleaner/deodorizer odor-eliminating shampoo Shampoo the car's interior, including carpets, upholstery and floor mats with an odor eliminating shampoo, available at hardware or home improvement stores. Clean all washable interior surfaces with the same shampoo. Put a small amount directly on a damp sponge, work in and wipe down.

Clean all the windows inside with a glass cleaner. Repeat if necessary. Sprinkle baking soda on dry carpet, working it in with your hands.

Wait a week and then vacuum. Clean leather upholstery with a commercial leather cleaner/deodorizer, available at your dealership or at home improvement stores. Vacuum ashtrays to remove residual ash.

Place a small amount of baking soda or kitty litter into the ashtrays to absorb odors. ______________________________________________________________________________ atmosphereproducts.com/product_images/oz... Ozium does not cover up the odors associated with sewer, pets, cooking and smoking - it eliminates them! .

Ozium, the original air purifier, is a chemical agent that actually eliminates smoke and unpleasant odors and reduces airborne bacteria. Ozium actually cleanses the air through glycolized action. The Ozium glycolized formula acts directly on odor causing particles in the air.

Ozium is distinguished from other products that simply mask odors. Ozium is an EPA registered air sanitizer and is safe to use residentially or commercially in homes, rental property, hospitals, nursing homes, hotels, veterinary clinics, restaurants, bars, laundry rooms, cars, mobil homes, offices, and just about anywhere there might be an odor problem. ______________________________________________________________________________ There is a substance called “sweet rock”.

I have seen it sold at large gas station/convenient stores and truck stops while traveling. I do not know the more scientific name for this substance, but it will remove any odor any place any time. It is a very porous material that soaks up every smell around. It works even if flat, but it is often sold carved into animals and such and ready to hang on your car mirror.

I have heard that car dealerships have ozone machines you plug into the lighter and leave running for a couple days or possibly a couple overnights. These are also sold to the public. They are similar to the ones used in hot tubs and spas that clean the water only these clean the air and the material that hold that smell.

Fabric softner towels. I used to smoke and someone told me to take a few of those fabric softner things that you throw in the dryer and put them in my car. I put two in the back seat and two in the front seat.

I could not believe it when after a few days the smell went away. The air that circulates from your vents. Heating or air conditioning moves the smell of the fabric softner around the car and you do not notice the smell anymore.

Give it a try, you have nothing to loose. Good luck .

Get it detailed The first thing I would do is get the car detailed. This way you can get some cleaning out of the way. The outside and the inside should be cleaned out by the end of the process.

If the cigarette smell is still there, try the coffee grounds. This is the cheapest and if you like coffee you get an added bonus. If that doesn't work, try the steps found on the link below and see if it works for you.

Ozone generator-you might be able to rent one, but it's probably cheaper in the long-run if you purchase one because you can use it for many different applications (basement, rooms, cars, garage, etc. )These are commercial units that are meant to "shock" treat an area. We actually manufacture these ozone generators, and we carry an auto unit. The unit is meant to sit on the outside of the vehicle, while a hose pumps ozone into the unoccupied vehicle for a few hours.

Ozone is 100% effective in destroying the molecules the odor is associated with. If you are serious about getting rid of your odors, look to us, The Ozone Experts. All units are made in the USA (upstate NY manufacturing facility) and a 30 day money back guarantee.

There is a company thats called know scent that goes to all the dealers and takes the smoke or smell out for good! It works you can find out through your dealer or at knowscent.com .

Take a can of lysol spray and while car is running with vents open and fan on high, direct the spray at intake vents at base of windshield(on outside of car). Be very generous! This helps to clean the vents of the heater/ac system.

You don't have to have windows up for this but it wouldn't hurt. After this do the following step. Peel a medium size raw irish baking potato.

Cut it in two lengthwise. Place the flat side of potato down in shallow dish and pour pure vanilla extract over the potato allowing some to pool in dish. Place one dish in cabin of car and other in trunk.

Allow car to run with heater on recirculate for about 5-10 minutes. Leave potato/vanilla in car at least overnight with windows rolled up. Potato will turn black and look awful but its ok!

I learned the potato trick when I worked for a hospital. Had some really horrid odors to eradicate sometimes. Worked like a charm.

The lysol at the vents I got from a car detailer/used car dealer. You can use odor-ban at vents also but I think the aerosol lysol works better.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
