Purchase a healthy tree from the lot. This will give you an advantage from the start. You can tell if a tree is healthy because it will have strong branches and smell good.

A healthy tree will only lose a small amount of needles when you shake the branches. Cut 1/2 to 1 inch off the bottom of the tree. This fresh cut will allow more water to enter the trunk, which will keep your tree fresher, longer.
