After you master the knit stitch, the purl stitch is the next stitch to tackle. All but the most basic knitting patterns require a purl stitch. Cast on the desired number of stitches on your left knitting needle.

Insert the right needle from right to left through the front of the first loop on the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle and pull it through the loop on the left needle. Use the right needle to pull the loop completely off the left needle.
