Although some people will tell you that you can no longer pan for gold in the Black Hills, there are a few tourist locations that you let you pay a certain price to pan all day---and you get to keep what you find. Many of these places will charge as much as $20 a day but offer introductory courses on how to pan for gold. Other places will charge you to purchase a bucket or real placer ore removed from a working mine that you can then pan.
Once you find a place in the Black Hills of South Dakota to start your panning adventure, you'll need to develop your panning skills, especially if you are a beginner. Obtain a day pass to pan at the Black Hills tourist facility at which you intend to pan.
