Involved, but do-able as long as you keep your head! First thing to remember is that to re-install the operating system will mean that you will be re-formating your hard disk, and the consequence of that is that all the data on that disk will be erased. So, Back up: you will want to back up all data files, as well as your IE favorites and Firefox bookmarks. To backup, either copy to disk, or to another computer.
Install disks: You want to make sure that you have available the install disks, not just for the operating system, but also the programs you are using and the programs/drivers for things like printer, mouse.... Check what to do: You will read and reread the instructions for doing the re-install. Check back up complete: You will check and re-check that you have saved every last bit you might want after. Check programs to re-install: You will look through your Programs Files folder again to make sure you can re-install all the programs you use.
(Programs like Firefox and Thunderbird you will download from the net, maybe you will do that beforehand and save with your other data so you can install them for first use afterwards. ) Verify internet connecting: You'll make sure you have your ISP/modem install disk and log-on data. Back up e-mail: And that reminds me, you'll want to make sure you back up the data files that are part of your email program (client is the techie's name).
Of course, if you use somrething like g-mail, this is not relevant. Decide when to install: When you've done all this preparation, and checked and rechecked that you have all you need, and understand what to do, you decide when you're going to start work. Remember, your computer wiill be completely out of action, then partially out of action, and the job will take hours.
My XP operating system, for instance, took three or four hours once it started the install. Then you have the programs and then the data to put back in place. Make an appointment with your computer to do the job - this is to ensure that you do not let yourself be interrupted (unless you choose), and maintain your concentration.
Well, I think that's most of it. The details will depend on the operating system and the programs and data you have installed. Good luck, you can do it!
(Note that I'm not a techie and I might have forgotten something. No doubt the generous Askville computer techies will be giving you good advice ^_^) Sources: personal experience .
1 It is mostly something that takes time. Dell ships systems with the system on a CD and most of the time in a partition of the hard drive. They can walk you through the process.
I have done it many times in my library work - usually about three hours or so, but it can do stuff while you wander off and come back. Good luck! .
