Partial Answer I am currently working on this problem myself. My key will no longer turn past the Acc. Place, and it is very hard to turn.
I have taken out the screws from underneath the steering column, and popped the bottom half of the plastic housing off. There are retaining "clips" that need to be released in order to remove the bottom half of the housing. You'll be able to spot them where the two pieces of the hosing are still tighly attached.
Take a flathead screwdriver and gently pry the top part off. You'll want to pry outwards on the top section, so that the top half moves outwards from the bottom half. Then remove the metal ring that rests in the lower plastic half, around the ignition switch; it should pull out with a pinger or a gentle pry with a screwdriver.
Using a small Phillips screwdriver, you can remove the orange light on the housing. Now you can see where the ignition is attached to the steering column, and also how to remove it. I have not been able to remove the top half of the housing to access the clamp nuts on the switch, that is the next step Yeah, were kind of having the same problem, except that ours is completely broke to the point where we have to use a screwdriver to turn the ignition on and off.So what we want to do is replace the whole ignition completely, and do not know exactly how to do that?
So if anyone has any information on how to do this, please let us know, please and thanks you!
If you will be asked what the function of your Nissan ignition switch is, you would probably answer it is used to start the engine operation so you can drive the vehicle. The ignition switch connects the starter to the battery. In a way, the ignition allows the battery to send electric power to the starter for cranking the engine.
But Nissan ignition switch's function is more than that. As what many people know, an ignition switch allows the driver to control the flow of power to some of the vehicle's electrical accessories, preventing these devices from running down the battery when the Nissan is parked for a long time. The Nissan ignition switch has four positions: off, accessories, on, and start.
Some vehicles have only two positions, the off and the lock. If you turn the ignition switch to the accessories position, some Nissan accessories like the radio are set for use. However, other accessories may not be allowed for operation even though the ignition switch is turned to accessories because these can consume too much power from the battery.
Accessories position uses the least amount of battery power when the engine is not running. When the ignition is switched to on position, all of the Nissan's systems like the fuel pump are turned on. Meanwhile, when the key is turned to start position, the starter engages and when the key is released, it will return to the on position and cut the power leading to the starter.
However, because of the constant use of Nissan ignition switch, it may malfunction and cause a problematic ignition switch. Damaged ignition switch may be used with any kind of key which makes your Nissan prone to stealing. So if you have a damaged Nissan ignition switch, don't hesitate to change it immediately to prevent a burglar from easily taking your automobile.
