How do you see a single, straight male with no straight male friends and all female friends?

It bugs me not to ask this! I have a friend that's in this situation. I think he's in the closet, but who knows... In his case, is this in any way bad?

I would say he's lucky to have good friends even if they are female. You need to stop worrying about the sexuality of people around you. It's none of your business who he sleeps with or if he sleeps with anyone.

Unless he chooses to tell you he's gay, get off the topic. If you are his friend he will eventually introduce you to a person he has developed a relationship with. I have a similar friend..... and his best friend, a female, has two gay men as her other closest friends. I want to call him on it, but I'm just not sure, and he's been on of my best friends for over five years! It's hard to comprehend not knowing if your best friend is gay or not.

There are some guys who hang out with women because they have no choice, such as they may be in a profession where there are all women (office work, retail, hair dressers) That could lead you to believe they were gay. There are some guys who hang out with women because they are trying to be pimps. I would assume that is obviously a sign of not being gay.

And then there are guys who are in the closet and feel comfortable around women to hide their lack of masculinity. Not necessarily that they are gay, but that they aren't manly men. All in all, it may bother you, but don't just come out and say "Are you gay?"

That's kind of startling and harsh, and they may deny it out of shock and then have negative feelings towards themselves and their preferences later down the road. The best thing you can do for your friend & friendship is let them know that it doesn't matter what their preference is, as long as they are happy with themselves. For the situation with my friend, he could come out and say "I'm gay" and I'd be surprised and relieved, but at the same time, he could say "I'm straight" and I'd be surprised and relieved.

Either way, I'd just say OK and we'd go on about our business.

When I was growing up, I had all male friends and no female friends...that did not make me a lady of the evening.
