How do you use hot or cold water on a barbeque propane gas tank to determine the remaining gas still available?

Hot water The idea is that the inside of the tank will be cold when gas is let out of it. (When you compress gas, it gets hot. When you decompress it, it gets cold.) So you can pour hot water on the side of the tank.
