DL-phenylalanine contains the amino acids L-phenylalanine and D-phenylalanine. L-phenylalanine, found naturally in protein-rich foods such as beef, poultry, pork, milk, eggs and soy, is converted by the body into another amino acid, L-tyrosine. L-tyrosine is responsible for the creation of certain proteins, thyroid hormones, and brain chemicals including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine.
Low levels of these neurotransmitters have been associated with poor mood and poor memory. D-phenylalanine, not found naturally in any food source, inhibits metabolic enzymes, such as Carboxypeptidase A, from preventing endorphin production. Endorphins are naturally-occurring opiate-like peptides that produce an analgesic effect.
DL-Phenylalanine is a 50/50 combination of these two essential amino acids. Together, they may promote emotional well-being and help support memory. NSI DL-Phenylalanine is better because it: • Provides 500 mg of DL-phenylalanine in one easy-to-swallow capsule.
