How does Parkinson's disease affect facial expressions?

People with Parkinson’s disease sometimes experience the loss of facial expression (masked faces) and have a fixed stare. When this happens, many nonverbal cues are lost and misunderstandings and miscommunications can occur. For example, a person with Parkinson’s disease may look bored or disapproving, which may not be the case at all.

If your facial movements lack expression, make an extra effort to express verbally how you feel and what you are thinking.
