That's "inject", not "ingest". It does it by buying US Treasury securities. Investors exchange US Treasury bills for cash from the Fed.
That puts money into their hands, and those investors put it into circulation (buying things, investing in stocks, funding banks, etc. ) Eventually, that money makes it into salaries, hopefully stimulating the economy as a whole. That's the most direct way of injecting money. The Fed has other ways to increase the money supply.
They can lower the Federal Funds Rate, which lets banks borrow money more cheaply, which again eventually puts cash into the system. (Though currently, the FFR is at essentially zero, and doesn't really go lower.) They also have the authority to lower bank reserves. That's why they're the "reserve" bank: banks are required to keep some of their money there.
That prevents them from lending it out, which reduces over-borrowing, cooling the economy. Reducing the reserve requirement lets the banks loan out more money.
Thanks PamPerdue...your answer was very helpful... Aliousousa 14 months ago .
I don't know about that, Pam. It seems that our economy is currently doing more "ingesting" of money than "injecting" it back! LOL .
Selling bonds is the easiest answer. It's the same method corporations use to raise funds when they need capital. The chapter on my link explains how the Federal Reserve manipulates the money supply fairly well.
