The 2007 Guinness World Record hottest pepper is featured at the Orange Coast College horticulture department’s spring plant sale Friday. The Bhut Jolokia, or ghost chili, is native to India and is 2,000 times hotter than a habanero pepper, according to Rick Harlow, head of the OCC ornamental horticulture department. Joe Stead, a part time horticulture instructor, started growing the plant for himself about a year ago. More seeds have since come on the market so it was decided to include the pepper in this year’s sale. “A lot of people like to really shop, they like to come and learn and the serious gardeners like to see new things so we try to provide them with that,” Harlow said.
The heat of a pepper is measured in scoville units and the ghost chili has 1 million scoville units, compared to the habanero’s 500, Harlow said. Sources.
