I ask because I am sure that most AV'ers are probably decent people trying to make a living and actually wanting the same things out of life for their families. The difference between us might just be the way we go about it. So... care to try and explain yourself?

My political views developed from a combination of: My upbringing My education--liberal arts and business The ethical teachings of religion. In my case, my upbringing formed a positive experience. I could also envision instances where someone's upbringing served to shift an individual to become a polar opposite.
I see all of us as complex beings with our own sets of priorities. I get frustrated when those with vested interests try to reduce all of us to one of two camps: Democrat or Republican Liberal or conservative Secular or religious Pro-abortion or anti-abortion Pro-science or pro-creationism Pro-Business or pro-Labor or, you name it... I think we all can think for ourselves (especially those of us in Askville) and form our own opinions on political, social, economic and other issues of our day. For example, if I were liberal or conservative in many of my leanings, I don't need the Democratic or Republican Party to tell me how I should feel with respect to abortion.
I am able to form my own opinions, thank you very much. I find that my opinions are often simultaneously in agreement and in disagreement with Party platforms. In addition to the above 3 driving factors of my political leanings, I have found that my political opinions are often heavily influenced by one or two issues which I find disproportionately important to me at a particular time in my life.
These issues are not constant over time. They change slightly as I age. Sources: my personal experience .
Great Question - Almost all my political beliefs are based on my understanding of Christianity, God and the Bible! Now, since I started like I did, I will also start with a disclaimer: I am not advocating Theocracy, I believe God already rules and I have no desire to force nonbelievers into my church, etc... Yet, I believe in my view points and will stand for them in a free country. I believe the 10 Commandments give us a good foundation for law.
Much better than political correctness. I believe the biblical idea of requiring two eye witnesses for a capital crime is a good one. I do not believe people should be prosecuted for their hidden thoughts (actually what someone else judges to be hidden thoughts) this is too subjective since we cannot read minds, only God will judge such things.
I believe guilty murderers should be executed and not unborn children. I believe BELIEF in man-caused global warming is more religious than scientific and is ultimately more earth worship than conservation. These are just a few of my views that are at least partially informed by the Bible..
I used to think Ronald Reagan was a bad idea. Then I stopped listening to my friends and the liberals only and began considering the evidence: Carter--hyperinflation; Reagan--stable currency, economic recovery, + ended cold war. And Reagan had a sense of humor that Carter never had.(But I will give him credit for being the right President at the right time when Three Mile Island almost went boom.) Over the next couple of decades, I realized that I really supported those who wish to conserve what we have, not give it away to others who don't want it, don't value it, and won't use it but to kill someone else.
In other words, I realized that the real problem was the person who would refuse to change. No liberal policies help such a person. The only impetus to change, actually, was going to come from being rejected by others and then seeing that companionship accompanies behavior.
In other words, I wanted my government to stop doing what the church should be doing and start doing what a government should do: enforce law, protect the citizens, defend the nation..
Mostly life experience I grew up in a staunch Republican small town in Pennsylvania inhabited by bitter people clinging to their guns and religion. (Obama’s insult given in SF) In college I became exposed to liberal ideolgy and adopted some of it. But I did have problems with a number of things.(1) "better red than dead" and "unilateral disarmament".
Both sounded cowardly and suicidal. (2) zero sum economics Marxists taught that wealth had to be redistributed. That the wealthy were stealing the production from the less wealthy without making a contribution of their own.
That there is only so much wealth in the world and the wealthy have hoarded it. This could not be true as it was obvious that wealth was constantly being created.(3) radical response to the Vietnam War I did not see any logical arguments against the war, only demonstrations. After college I gradually became more attuned to the Republicans.
But eventualy I realized I could not tolerate their religious attitude since I am an atheist. For example, prayer in schools is objectionable to me. I decided that the Liberatarian Party was closer to my personal philosophy.
Last summer I watched the Libertarian convention on C-SPAN and was shocked by their attitude. All they were doing was bashing Bush. They might as well be Democrats.
I checked their website. You have to disavow violence as a means to solve problems. That did not settle well with me since it meant the Civil War should not have been fought to eliminate slavery.
Investigating further I found that there are many varieties of libertarians and that the Party only represented one faction. Too bad! I've concluded the Party is the biggest problem for libertarians.
They could have been inclusive and become a larger force in America. So now I guess I have to re-register as an independent..
My father was a Democrat and a Mason(Some organization with the G in the middle and some compass, very secretive) My stepmother die hard Catholic (BUT HATED CHURCH)(Molested by a priest when she was a little girl) I am a believer of God,but not religion. I am neither a Democrat nor Republican and I vote whom I think will be best for the country and most of the time is the lesser of 2 evils. I read my Bible, and I ask God to interpret for me and I have my own beliefs of God and s intentions for HUMANS.
I am in my own opinion a variable unaccounted for or in other words there is no religion that fits my credo. There is no political organization that fits my view.As a child and young adult I was able to travel to some foreign countries and I lived in one for 5 years allowing me to gain insight of other cultures and the realization that although the U.S.A. May have its faults it is at the present the most free country in the world and I thank God I was born here in the U.S. To enjoy the freedom of worship, speech, and the election of its leaders. My GOD,I could have been the son of a Taliban or Alqueda (misspelled)or the son of Charles Manson.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
