How long does it take a broken ankle to heal?

I broke my ankle on July 4th , casted on July 9th and have had signficant swelling ever since. When I get up to fix lunch or anything for more than 5 minutes, my foot swells and turns blue. I went back to dr. and had them cut cast down the sides to relieve some of the pressure but it is still happening.

Is this normal? How long do I need to stay off of it? Asked by Clemsongirl 53 months ago Similar questions: long broken ankle heal Health.

At Least 6 weeks to heal If you have not called your doc and told them you continue to have swelling problems, you need to do so, pronto. Broken ankles take at least 6 weeks to heal, and after that it can take several months to be able to return to sports or other physical activity. Swelling is not unusual, and it isn't unusual to have to have a cast removed, or have a temporary splint of some sort until the swelling goes down.

Elevating your leg can help the swelling. Hope you're feeling better soon. Sources: orthoinfo.aaos.org/fact/thr_report.cfm?T... .

It depends..... There are many ways to "break" an ankle, given that the "ankle" is a conglomeration of many bones, and you haven't provided us with any details on what exactly you've broken. That said, it sounds like you have a pretty serious injury given what happens when you are up on it. Doubtless you've been given instructions by your doctor to stay off it (in terms of weight-bearing forces) for a certain length of time, and it's very important to do so given what your body is doing when you don't.Be sure to use crutches when you are up and about.

Providing you are using crutches religiously, then it sounds like you've got some circulation issues, and it would be important to keep your leg elevated as much as possible. Some injuries can take a long time to heal, several months, especially breaks that require hardware to put back together. And if you are aggravating it somehow, it will take longer.

My experience with people who have their ankles casted up is that they get pretty impatient with using crutches and start limping around without them, therefore putting weight on an ankle that can't handle it, which exacerbates the injury. If you take good care of it, you should be able to gradually introduce weight-bearing stress on it -- but-- with the feedback you are now getting from your ankle, it sounds too early for even short forays into the kitchen without crutches..

That depends on many factors. What's your diet like? Do you take supplements?

Do you get plenty of sleep? Certain nurtients can help us heal faster. Vitamin C is one nutrient I take in larger amounts if I’ve hurt myself.

I recently broke my little toe and I’m taking calcium with magnesium, spirulina (which you may not be familiar with, but is a great wound healer), adequate protein for muscle repair and minerals. If you don’t get enough sleep, you don’t heal. You can research this yourself, but our most critical healing time is between midnight and 4 am.

I was surprised and facinated by that. I would look online for natural remedies - sports injuries. Hope this helps. My toe is healing VERY fast.

P.S. sugar doesn’t help your cause. It creates more acid in the body which hinders your efforts. You’ll heal but possibly slower.

Are you elevating it? How long you have to stay off it depends on all these factors. Too much alcohol can slow healing as well.

Arnica might help with stiffness and brusing, both topically and internally.

No that is not normal. What kind of doctor are you seeing? The best kind of doctor for these kind of injuries is an orthopedic surgeon.

There is something that is being done to the injury that is aggravating it that is not allowing it to heal. Html.

1 ccorax, regarding your answer "it depends.....": Thanks for your answer. I've been using the crutches religiously. I broke the bottom of the outer bone (not sure what it is called) - no surgery.

I stayed completely off of it (meaning only getting off couch to use restroom, go to bed, etc. ) for about one week then I tried to go to work for half days...that only lastest 3 days before I was back on the couch for 3 more days. I've gone to work for the last 2 days for 4 hours a day but each night it is so swollen and the cast feels like a vice. I go back to doctor on Thursday for the cast to be removed and more xrays.

I sure hope they an do something to alleviate these issues. I am going crazy laying around on the couch and need to get back to work.
