Socialism and wealth redistribution are dead end streets. Liberals still advocate these failed policies because making people dependent on government empowers liberals. They can forever scare a dependent populace by telling them "Republicans want to take away your benefits!"
What they don't realize is that capitalism's greatest benefit is self reliance. Thanks for a well researched and thoroughly informative essay.
Also. When you talk of standard of living, you are speaking of averages. But if you separate it by percentile of population, you find that our top 5% live so much much better than anyone else in the world, while our poorest 25% live worse than the lowest 25% in Greece, for instance.
So even the bankrupts socialists are not as far behind us as you might like to imagine. European CEOs earn 1/4 of what ours do and pay almost twice the tax. I realize their salaries are set by their Boards of Directors, but can't we do something to encourage ours to be more sensible?
The extra $24 million each average CEOs earns each year here, could be used to hire 300 new workers. America used to be the land of opportunity, the home of the Horatio Alger story, but today, a person born poor in the USA is five times more likely to die poor than a European. The USA was once also number one in many things, not just military strength.
We have some of the finest healthcare in the world, but the healthcare of the median American is no better than that of Cuba, which has a tenth of our standard of living, but is ten times better than Haiti.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
