Gymnastics is a complex sport made up of many different events and activities and range in difficulty according to age and ability. For young children, gymnastics activities are usually limited to basic tumbling and flexibility exercises, with the formal apparatus activities beginning around age 8 or 9. In competition, the apparatus events are sometimes referred to as “rotations” during competitions because the competing teams rotate from one apparatus to another.
A set number of activities are required when participating in national and international sports, whether as a team or on an individual level. In women's gymnastics, there are four rotations: uneven bars, balance beam, floor exercise, and vault. In men's gymnastics, there are six: parallel bars, still rings, pommel horse, floor exercise, and vault.
Due to the amount of flexibility, strength, and skill that is required for each event, successful gymnasts have very strict training schedules in order to perfect their routines and earn high scores during their competition.
