One of our English Bulldogs has her first litter of puppies a few months ago. She had seven. Prior to people even coming to look at the puppies I make sure they understand a few things.

If you work all day, or plan on leaving the puppy alone for hours on end every day a puppy may not be a good choice. Puppies and dogs need attention or they will be bored and get into trouble. They will eat things they are not supposed to.

With that being said, I do suggest that the first couple nights the puppy may cry a bit. This would be normal. It is their first time away from Mom, Dad and their brothers and sisters and they may be a bit scared in a new surrounding. My suggestion is to keep the puppy close and give them lots of hugs and kisses.

I know many people suggest in crating dogs, but I do not suggest or recommend it. I have a;ways blocked off and area in the house, perhaps the dining room with a gate and keep a dog bed and plenty of toys in there. You can start potty training your puppy immediately and treat it as if you were potty training a child.

You, the adult, need to be very consist the first week. Let the puppy eat and then take him potty. If he doesn't go, give him 30 more minutes and try again.

If he has an accident, firmly say no (DO NOT HIT OR SPANK) and then take him outside. You do not want to make going outside a punishment, or you will have a hard time with potty training. Another tip for a new puppy, besides giving him tons of kisses and hugs is to puppy proof the house, just like you would a baby!
