The carpets have to GO, as the glop has soaked down, down, down, down, through the padding and probably into the wood. If it was just a few spots you could try some enzymes like "Nature's Miracle", but the stuff, although it works well, is like $25 a gallon, and you'd need about 100 gallons. Have a talk with the in-laws.
Unless they're totally loony they'll let you take out the carpeting. As for the wood floor, a gallon or two of "Nature's Miracle", applied to where it smells, may very well do the trick. If they don't mind a blotched bleached look, regular old Clorox bleach is cheaper and may do just as good a job.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
