How was crime and punishment delt with in the roman times?

It depended on the crime as to the punishment. Most crimes were punishable by fines. More serious crimes, such as murder or treason were punishable by death or exile.

The punishments depended to a large extent upon the social class of the guilty. The sentences were carried out immediately except in cases of appeal.
