Cancer research is a very charitable cause and people will be willing to participate in any fundraiser you do as long as it's large scale. So try to do a large event, not a tiny bake sale. Our community has an annual walkathon/race.
You pay a small fee to participate in the course, which spans a few miles. Most people just walk the whole thing for the charity, but a few run. The winner of the race gets a prize, sponsered by a local business or a portion of the entry fee revenues.
I think all the participants gets a favor bag sponsered by local companies (of course, we have the Jelly Belly factory in our town, so it might be easier for us) Either way, make sure that you can prove the money really does go to charity. I'm not sure about this procedure. You might have to register as a non-profit charity with the IRS or something.
You could hold a bake sale and use the proceeds for the charity. Perhaps you could do a sponsored silence, or maybe a marathon, depends what type of thing you want to do.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
