I think this may be what you want. When I read your question this immediately popped into my mind. I saw an interview with the author Hard America, Soft America and I read a good part of the book while waiting in a book store while my wife was shopping.
I also saw an interview with the author of the second book America Alone. I haven't read it, but he speak of the role of personal responsibility in sustaining our culture. I know nothing about the last book, but the title and description seemed like something you might be interested in.

How much responsibility do individuals have to make things better for society.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
