I think it is pretty clear that personal responsibility has taken a plunge as a cultural ethic in this country. Not even 20 years ago there were still movies about the value of personal responsibility, but even that seems to have fallen by the wayside. We have fewer and fewer examples from our various leaders of its importance.
But I don't believe it is dead. I actually know a few people who still practice it as a way of life, as I do and as I have taught my children to do, and my experience with it is that a sense personal responsibility really goes beyond a cultural or national trend- it is actually a human trait among people awake enough to actually see the connection between what they do and the consequences that follow. Just because it is not socially popular right now as a national ethic, the feeling of personal responsibility still brings with it the rewards it always has, which is a much greater sense of empowerment and freedom.
We feel more empowered when we see both the effects of our causes and then know that we can alter things by altering our causes, and consequently we find a much greater sense of freedom from what others see as their fate. We find that we can change it! I really do hope personal responsibilty becomes popular in our culture again- that alone might even make us more popular in the world again, and it would make our lives all the richer here inthis culture, but in the meantime, I encourage everyone to try it!
After the first scary moments, it is actually fun! .
It's not dead but certainly dying. We see examples of it every day. We don't teach our childrent respect for others, or that there are consequents for their actions, etc.We want the schools to be responsible for teaching our children right from wrong.

It started with Adam and Eve Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent... We have not changed a bit. It's not just our society -- it's the entire human race. But I do see your point, that aside.
We live in a time when it has become fashionable to blame either nature or nuture for a person's behavior, if not simply passing the buck. But we are not robots and we do make decisions about our actions. We may not be able to help what happens TO us, but we adults, at least, are entirely responsible for how we respond..
It is not dead, but it is scarce. You only hear about the cases that lack personal responsibility because the citizens that do take responsibility for their actions don't go to court. They disposed of the matter quietly, apologize, and move on.
There is no public benefit to taking responsibility, only expenses and hard work. Not taking responsibility merely spreads the cost to the rest of us through higher insurance premiums and a backed up court system. Taking responsibility for one's actions is rare and getting rarer, but it is not dead.
Taking the easy way out seems better at the time, but the long term effects of the lack of responsibility hurt us all. I hope this helps. Manimal's Recommendations QBQ!

Of course not! As always, there is a range of variation in terms of how people take responsibility for themselves. I see no evidence to suggest that the range of behaviors is any different than it has been forever.
I don't see our culture embracing a loss of self-reliance. In fact, I think we're going more towards behaving smarter, and becoming more and more capable. Paradoxically, this is because we are ever more recognizing the importance of cooperation, and we are learning how to cooperate more effectively.
Of course, this is a three steps forward, two steps back kind of process. But overall, my impression is that we are getting better. I suggest you look at the overall technical improvements in our ability to do things smarter.
I suggest you look at the 6.3% productivity improvement over the last year, reported on NPR this morning. I suggest you take account of the fact that Americans work 350 hours a year more than Europeans, per year. We also work more hours than the Japanese.
We work, on average, more than any other people on earth. This is not a sign that self-reliance is disappearing. It may be a sign of desperation, but people's response to desperation seems to be to try to do better, not to give up and throw our problems on someone else.
Sure, some people are not doing as well. Some people will blame anyone, rather than trying to figure out their own problems. It happens.
But, as I said, I don't see anything to indicate it is happening any more than it ever did.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
