MY NAME IS RED, by Orhan Pamuk MY NAME IS RED, by Orhan Pamuk, Alfred A. Knopf, 2001, is a wonderful dip into cultural Islam. An historical novel set in Istanbul during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Murat III, 1574-95, and somewhat beyond into the reign of Sultan Ahmet I, it concerns the fate of miniaturists and illuminators whose art form began during the Timurid Dynasty, 1370-1526.
Early fifteenth century Herat (of present day Afghanistan) had been the center of Islamic painting, and Bihzad was considered its greatest master. Sources: http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/december_2001/books.html .
This was a powerful, complex, and moving book After reading this, I had the chance to first hear the author speak, and then, afterward, take place in a small group discussion with him. He went on to win the nobel prize. "My Name is Red" by Orhan Pamuk This novel stirred me; it is at once historical, emotional, romantic, thrilling, and heavily philosophical.
There are large portions of it which discuss specific areas of Islamic (Ottoman / Turkish ... the terminological distinctions can become ponderous) art, especially illuminated manuscripts. It isn't just a discussion ... it's an exploration of the relationship between human beings and society and art and ... ah! As you can tell, I get overwhelmed when I start discussing this.My only advice besides purchasing (or borrowing this book) would be to make sure to 'hang in there' for the first ... say 75-100 pages, which are much slower than the rest of the book.
Don't give up on it ... the rewards will be many. Best of luck & enjoy! Sources: Life experience ... MarcusTulliusCicero's Recommendations My Name Is Red Amazon List Price: $14.95 Used from: $8.00 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 93 reviews) .
