I've been told by Krav Maga instructors that you can burn over 900 calories in an intense one hour bag class. I've never had an elliptical workout tire me out as much as a bag class, so I'm inclined to believe them. The bag classes consist of rapid punching, kicking, kneeing and elbowing of heavy punching bags combined with other exercises such as push ups, crunches, sprawls, burpees, jumping, etc. They are a combination exercise class and technique builder, meant to compliment Krav Maga training.

If you aren't familiar with it, Krav Maga is a self defense fighting system adopted by the Israeli Army and rapidly gaining popularity amongst American civilians and law enforcement. It is characterized by a brutal practicality that is meant to teach people of all sizes and shapes to defend themselves as efficiently as possible. Since it is entirely about self defense, groin kicks, eye strikes, small joint manipulation, and other things banned by sporting arts are legitimate techniques in Krav Maga.

Burning 1000 calories in one workout is extremely unhealthy. The average amount of calories burned in a workout ranges from 100 to 300, based on your metabolism. 500 is already above average, 1000 is outright dangerous.

Perhaps instead of working out until you burn 1000, you could do your routine work out and try out a healthy diet. The reduced calories from the diet plus your regular routine should result in about 1000 calories less for your daily intake.
