There are several possible reasons I've seen a similar behavior for several different reasons. Please check each and everyone and you should be ok. Let's start from the easier ones to the more difficult: 1 - Try a different USB port.

Sometimes a port may get damage for some reason 2 - Try a different USB cable. Cables get damaged too. 3 - Try rebooting your computer.

If you put your computer to hibernate, sometimes USB ports do now "awake". Rebooting should put everything back to normal 4 - Try using a different computer, if you have another one around. If the same usb cable works on a different computer, than you will be sure it is not from the cable.

5 - Last but not least, check your camera settings: sometimes you can change the USB port behavior to act as a printer connection or as a "USB disk". It should be a "usb disk" for you to be able to see it using your computer. If you can tell which camera you're using as well as which operating system, maybe it will be possible to give you more detailed information.
